Play ball!: baseball season begins

Nothing says "spring is here" like the start of the baseball season. And this past weekend marked the beginning of Little League baseball in our town, like thousands across the country.

Major League Baseball inaugurated its 2010 season last week, but for me, baseball season is as much about the kids and the wider social phenomenon of baseball as it is about the pros. The game is evocative of the promise of youth: the recollection of fond childhood memories, and seeing the renewal from younger generations.

Our local season begins with a traditional ritual: a parade of hundreds of kids through the streets of our Brooklyn neighborhood. Both of our boys marched, the younger one (five years old) for the first time, and he found it a little overwhelming. The parade is led by the great sounds of the Approaching Storm Marching Band, pictured here. You can't beat a parade of dancing people at 10am on a Saturday morning.
